  • Financial Therapy Couples | John Hankins

I offer Financial Therapy for Couples using the EFT therapy model. Financial Therapy for Couples Exploring How Money Shapes the Relationship Between You and Yo ur Partner Money is never just about dollars and cents—it’s about trust, values, security, and love. For couples, it’s often where deeper differences and emotions surface. One partner wants to save, the other wants to spend. One avoids money conversations, while the other feels the weight of carrying it all. Over time, these patterns can create cycles of conflict that leave you both feeling unheard, misunderstood, or alone. My approach to financial therapy helps couples uncover the “money stories” and resulting triggers that shape these patterns—often rooted in childhood experiences or past relationships. Left unexamined, these stories can fuel stress, anxiety, avoidance, or self-sabotage. Bringing them into the open allows you and your partner to understand each other in a new way and begin building healthier, more supportive financial habits together. I primarily use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) in my work with couples. EFT helps partners move beyond surface-level disagreements and address the underlying needs for security, trust, and connection. By combining EFT with financial therapy, I help couples not just solve money problems, but also strengthen the emotional bond that makes lasting change possible. As your financial therapist, I provide a safe, structured space to talk about money without judgment. Together, we’ll improve communication, reduce conflict, and create practical strategies that fit your shared goals. My goal is to help you move from money stress to relationship strength—so that finances become a source of connection, not division.

  • Financial Therapy | John Hankins

Financial therapy begins with recognizing that money is deeply intertwined with thoughts, feelings and behaviors. The focus is on your relationship with money. Financial Therapy for Individuals Understanding Your Relati onship With Money My approach to financial therapy begins with recognizing that money is never just numbers—it’s deeply tied to emotions, beliefs, and behaviors. Each of us carries a unique “money story,” often shaped by what we observed in childhood and reinforced throughout our lives. These stories can sometimes leave us feeling stuck: you know what you want to do—save for retirement, pay down debt, or feel at peace with your spending—but patterns of anxiety, avoidance, or self-sabotage keep getting in the way. When working with individuals, I draw primarily on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Narrative Therapy. ACT helps you build awareness of the thoughts and emotions that show up around money, while also clarifying your values and taking committed steps toward the life you want. Narrative Therapy creates space to re-examine the money stories you’ve inherited or internalized, separating your identity from limiting beliefs and opening the door to new, more empowering narratives. Together, these approaches allow us to unpack your experiences, get to the root of what drives your financial behaviors, and rewrite the way money fits into your life. My goal is to support you in developing healthier financial habits, reducing the emotional weight of money, and ultimately fostering a greater sense of well-being—both financially and personally. Job Stress I've added this section in response to the frequent requests from my clients to bring issues in their work lives into our therapy sessions. After researching this area, I was surprised to find that work and jobs, like money, don't receive as much dedicated attention in traditional therapy as I believe they deserve. It's clear to me that work and financial well-being are deeply intertwined. Work is the primary means of generating and building wealth, but it also significantly shapes our identity and social status. It empowers us to provide for ourselves and our loved ones. However, work can also be a source of significant anxiety, pain, and even feel like a trap. Given my own diverse and sometimes challenging career experiences , both in employment and volunteering, I have a deep understanding of the realities of today's workplace. I welcome discussions about your work life in our sessions. This could encompass a wide range of topics, from navigating conflicts with your boss to refining your resume and exploring job search strategies. Talking About Job Stress in Financial Therapy

  • Retirement Counseling | Financial Therapy

This service focuses on both retirement planning as well as navigating the world after retirement. Retirement Counseling Let's Talk About Your Future My approach to retirement counseling serves two distinct groups. Younger couples and individuals where retirement is pretty far in the future, and those already retired or planning on retiring in the next few years. Let's start with the younger group. Perhaps you will recognize yourself in this. The people that I work with here are typically focused on making progress with retirement planning. That could be the start of a plan or just getting savings in place, or maybe they already have a plan and contribute to a 401(k). But what they all have in common is that they are stuck. They can’t seem to move forward with that next step. This might be due to shame or anxiety of just being confused about where to start. Let’s agree that this stuff is not easy, especially on top of everything else going on in your life. You don’t have to do this alone. Together, we can get you moving in the right direction. If you are in the older group, you are facing a massive transition. Not only are you stepping away from that regular paycheck you've enjoyed for the past 40 years, but you also need to figure out what you are leaving behind and what comes next. I can say from my own experience that this is very tough stuff. That first day when you are no longer employed can feel pretty weird. Now you have multiple challenges. You need to figure out your new identity as a “retired person”. And, as if that wasn't enough, you need to take charge of the finances that have to last you the rest of your life. On top of this, you are likely hitting some of the other speed bumps that show up at this stage of life, maybe it is a health crisis with you or your partner, or the need to care for aging parents, or just acknowledging that your body is showing real signs of wear. This can feel like a tremendous burden at a time when things are supposed to be getting easier. Or maybe retirement is just around the corner, and you are feeling overwhelmed. In either case, please understand that it is ok to ask for help. Working with me - what to expect
